Google is officially rolling out AI Mode in Search to users in India. The company is making the chatbot-style experience available beyond its earlier test phase. Google CEO Sundar Pichai confirmed the rollout in a post on X, saying, “After an incredible response in Labs, we’re starting to roll out AI Mode in Search to everyone in India (English to start).”

This rollout does not require any sign-up or access through Search Labs. According to Google, “Over the coming days, users will see a new tab for AI Mode appear in Search and in the search bar in the Google app.” The update will work in English and includes all the features that were first tested in Labs.

What AI Mode offers and how it works

AI Mode changes how people use Google Search. Instead of typing a few keywords and scrolling through links, users can now ask full questions, speak their queries out loud, or even take a picture using Lens to search.

The answers they get are AI-generated summaries based on content available across the web. These summaries include links to relevant sources. Users can follow up with more questions for deeper exploration.

The feature mirrors a chatbot experience, similar to what users might find in tools like ChatGPT and Perplexity, but it is built directly into Google Search.

A key expansion into one of Google’s biggest markets

Expanding to other regions and countries remains part of Google’s growth plans. The move brings AI Mode beyond the U.S. and targets one of Google's largest markets.

India has over 870 million internet users, and giving this group direct access to the feature could significantly change how people interact with Google Search.

Google first launched AI Mode in March for a small group of paid U.S. users, and later extended the feature to Search Labs users. In India, Google began testing AI Mode in Labs in June, and now it is going live for everyone.
