Apple has signed a multi-year deal with Google to build its next Apple Foundation Models on Google’s Gemini AI and cloud technology. According to the joint announcement, these models will support future Apple Intelligence features, including an upgraded version of Siri expected to roll out this year.
Previous reports hinted at this development. In November, reports said Apple would rely on Google’s Gemini AI to upgrade Siri, having evaluated models from OpenAI and Anthropic before leaning toward Google.
Apple said the decision followed an internal evaluation of several AI systems. The company claims it concluded that Google’s AI technology provided the strongest foundation for its next phase of development. “After careful evaluation, we determined that Google’s technology provides the most capable foundation for Apple Foundation Models and we’re excited about the innovative new experiences it will unlock for our users,” the companies wrote.
At that time, reports claimed Apple could pay roughly $1 billion per year for access to Google’s AI technology. However, the joint announcement does not confirm any financial terms, and neither company has commented on pricing.
Impact on Siri and Apple Intelligence
Apple has already signaled that Siri is due for a significant upgrade. Gemini will now play a role in how those improvements are delivered. Earlier reports said Apple planned to use Gemini for specific functions like summarization and planning while keeping other parts of Siri developed in-house. This structure appears to remain in place.
Apple keeps control over data and delivery
Despite using Google’s AI models, Apple Intelligence will still run on Apple devices and through its Private Cloud Compute servers. This setup allows Apple to use third-party AI models while keeping data processing aligned with its existing privacy framework.
Apple sees Google’s Gemini models as a temporary solution while it develops its own AI systems. The upgraded Siri is expected in spring 2026, and Apple may add other third-party AI tools in the future.
