Shopify will let Muse, Meta’s personal AI agent, complete purchases on Shopify stores using Shop Pay, according to The Wall Street Journal. Shopify chief executive Tobias Lütke announced the partnership on X on 21 September, the paper reported.

Meta introduced the Muse agent on 8 September and already listed Shop Pay as a payment option that was “coming soon”. Neither company has published a newsroom post on the deal, and fees, launch timing and markets for Muse checkout have not been announced.

What Muse Is

Muse is an agent that acts for a person rather than only answering questions. People give it a task in the Muse app or in WhatsApp, and it can open a browser, fill in forms and complete a purchase. It runs on Muse Spark, the model The Keyword covered in April.

Meta says Muse asks for approval before it makes a purchase and keeps an audit trail of everything it does. At launch it paid through Link, Stripe’s wallet, which generates a one-time card so a shopper’s real card details stay hidden. Muse is rolling out in the US on iOS, Android and the web, free for most uses, with paid plans for people who want more.

Shop Pay adds a second way to pay. It stores a shopper’s payment and shipping details across Shopify stores, which gives an agent a checkout it can complete without re-entering them on every site.

What Changes for Shopify Merchants

For most merchants the groundwork is already switched on. On 8 September Shopify added Meta as a channel in its Agentic Storefronts settings, and products are shared with Meta by default through Shopify Catalog.

Shopify’s help page for the Meta channel sets out the current terms, although it does not mention Muse by name. Direct checkout is on by default for eligible stores and is shown to customers in the US, Canada and Mexico. Merchants can turn it off under Sales channels, then Agentic, and shoppers are then sent to the store’s own site to finish buying.

The same page lists no fees beyond standard payment processing. Orders are attributed to Meta, and the merchant stays the merchant of record. Shopify also notes that switching off Catalog access does not stop a store’s public pages from being crawled.

Shopify Becomes the Checkout Layer for AI Agents

Muse joins ChatGPT as an AI assistant that can buy from Shopify stores. In January The Keyword reported a 4% fee for Shopify merchants on ChatGPT checkout sales, and Shopify launched Agentic Storefronts in December 2025 to send merchant catalogs to AI platforms.

Shopify has also said that AI agents will not bypass its checkout, a position The Keyword covered in February. The Muse deal follows that line. The agent does the shopping, but payment runs through Shop Pay and the order is recorded as the merchant’s own.

For advertisers, the open question is attribution. A purchase an agent completes may never pass through an ad click or a product page, and Shopify counts those orders as Meta channel sales. Merchants deciding whether to leave direct checkout on are weighing control of the final step against access to Meta’s agent.
