YouTube has launched Reimagine, an AI-powered creation tool that lets any viewer select a frame from an eligible Short and generate a new 8-second video using Google's Veo video generation model.

The feature is nested within YouTube's existing Remix tool. Users can add up to two photo references from their camera roll to insert themselves, objects, or environments into the generated clip. Every Reimagined Short links automatically back to the original creator's work, giving that creator reach from content they did not produce.

How Reimagine works

Reimagine uses Veo, Google's video generation model, to produce 8-second clips with audio from a single selected frame. Gemini handles text prompt suggestions, offering users starting points if they are unsure how to describe the transformation they want. The feature was tested with a small group of creators from late February 2026 before its public launch on March 18.

The video generation process requires no editing experience. A viewer opens a Short, selects a frame, optionally supplies up to two photo references, and lets Veo produce the clip. Output is fixed at 8 seconds with audio, keeping it compatible with standard Shorts distribution formats.

The creator attribution model

Unlike TikTok's Green Screen or Duet features, which place original and derivative content side by side without guaranteed attribution, Reimagined Shorts link directly to the source creator's channel. When a viewer watches a Reimagined Short and taps through, they are directed to the original. This design gives original creators a measurable reach benefit from AI-generated derivatives.

The attribution model reflects a broader platform question: as AI generation tools make it easier to produce video content without original source material, how should platforms structure the relationship between original creators and AI output? YouTube's approach makes creator visibility a structural feature of every derivative, rather than an opt-in or manual credit.

YouTube's position in AI video

TikTok has offered comparable creative remix tools, including Duet, Green Screen, and AI-enhanced effects, for years. Meta rolled out AI-powered video remixing for Reels in 2025. YouTube's differentiator is the underlying model. Veo powers Google's standalone AI video generation products, suggesting higher output quality than filter-based or template-driven approaches used by competitors.

For brands and creators with existing Shorts content, Reimagine introduces a new category of user-generated derivative: AI-produced content that references existing assets, creative concepts, or creator partnerships at scale. A Short can now become raw material for viewer-generated content, with attribution intact.

The rollout follows YouTube's broader integration of Google AI into creator tools, including AI-generated subtitles, translation features, and the Veo-powered Dream Screen background generator already available in Shorts. Reimagine extends that suite to the output level, enabling generative transformation of existing content rather than just input assistance. No specific availability timeline beyond "rollout has begun" was provided.
