Meta’s Threads has crossed 400 million monthly active users, according to Instagram head Adam Mosseri. That is a 50 million increase from April, when the company reported 350 million users during the first quarter of 2025. In January, Threads had 320 million users.

The platform was launched in July 2023 as Meta’s direct competitor to X. Since its launch, it has seen consistent growth, and the pace of that growth puts it in a strong position in the social media race.

Threads has been Meta’s biggest push into text-based social networking since Facebook’s early years. In a post marking the milestone, Mosseri said the platform began as “a zany idea to compete with Twitter” but has evolved into “a meaningful platform that fosters the open exchange of perspectives.”

The race with X is getting tighter

X, owned by Elon Musk, claims it has 600 million monthly active users. That’s 200 million more users than Threads. However, third-party data suggest the engagement gap between X and Threads is narrowing. For instance, in June, Threads reached 115.1 million daily active mobile users, up 128% compared to last year. X led with 132 million daily active users, but that number is down more than 15% year over year.

There is also competition beyond X. Bluesky, another decentralized alternative to X, has seen steady growth following a spike in sign-ups after last year’s U.S. elections. Bluesky now has 38 million accounts, up from 30 million in March.

Threads moves toward full-scale monetization

With 400 million monthly users, Threads has a stronger case to pitch advertisers. Meta is positioning Threads as a platform where advertisers can reach a substantial audience without relying on X or other platforms. The company has already opened ad placements globally and is also testing video ads.

If X continues to decline and Threads’ daily engagement continues to climb, the platform could become part of the core ad mix for brands targeting text-based social media users. However, both Meta and X have faced criticism over political influence on their platforms. Smaller networks like Bluesky could see surges if users migrate away from these platforms.
