Threads is seeing massive growth in daily mobile usage, closing in on X. According to Similarweb data reported by TechCrunch, Threads’ iOS and Android app reached 115.1 million daily active users in June 2025. That’s a year-over-year growth rate of nearly 128%.
During the same period, X recorded 132 million daily active users, but its year-over-year growth declined by over 15% compared to the previous year.Â
U.S. market data shows a narrowing gap between Threads and X
In the U.S., the numbers are getting closer too. Threads recorded 15.3 million daily active users on mobile devices, trailing behind X’s 22.9 million. But considering Threads launched just two years ago, it’s quickly becoming a big competitor.
Bluesky, the decentralized platform that has attracted attention in certain circles, lags in daily U.S. mobile usage, with just 1.1 million users. Still, it’s showing huge growth rates—up 372.5% year over year—even if its total audience remains small.
Meta plans new ad formats to monetize Threads’ growing user base
This data shows that Threads is growing, and as it continues to scale, Meta is actively preparing to monetize the platform. The platform has already introduced image-based ad placements to users which it claims have now reached 350 million monthly. That’s up from 320 million the previous quarter, which Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced at the time.
The platform also plans to roll out short-form video ads. These videos will appear between posts in 16:9 or 1:1 formats, much like what brands already run on Instagram or Facebook.
But X still leads by far on the web
While Threads is catching up fast on mobile, it’s a different story on the web. Similarweb reports that X leads with 145.8 million average daily web visits worldwide. Threads lags far behind with just 6.9 million, slightly ahead of Bluesky’s 5.3 million.
In the U.S., Bluesky is also outperforming Threads on the web. Bluesky had 2.4 million daily web visits in June, while Threads only pulled in about 985,200. X, on the other hand, held strong with 33.1 million daily U.S. web visits.
Threads launched in July 2023, right after Elon Musk acquired Twitter and made a string of changes that sparked user backlash. Many left the platform, especially around the time of the U.S. presidential elections when Musk aligned more publicly with Donald Trump.
That shift pushed many users toward alternatives like Threads and Bluesky. While that initial wave has cooled off since early 2025, Threads has continued to grow, particularly on mobile.
