OpenAI sets early ChatGPT ad pricing at about $60 CPM
The reported CPM is roughly three times higher than the average Meta ad rate

Get Smarter at Marketing
OpenAI is asking advertisers to pay roughly $60 per 1,000 impressions to run ads inside ChatGPT, according to a report from The Information. That price puts ChatGPT ads well above most digital platforms and closer to premium TV inventory than typical social media buys.
To put that into context, Meta’s CPMs are typically much lower. Data from Affect Group shows Meta ads usually range from $10 to $15 CPM, with a maximum of $15 to $20. Even the higher end of Meta’s pricing rarely approaches what OpenAI reportedly charges for ChatGPT placements.
The Information says the company is pricing ChatGPT ads at levels similar to live NFL games and highly targeted streaming inventory.
Performance data advertisers will receive
According to The Information, advertisers running ads in ChatGPT will receive limited reporting. The data provided will include high-level metrics such as total impressions and total clicks.
The report says there will be no visibility into what happens after a user sees or clicks an ad. Advertisers will not be told whether a user made a purchase, signed up for a service, or took any other actions. This differs from the reporting typically available on platforms like Google and Meta, which offer conversion and attribution data.
Early campaigns may function more like reach or awareness buys rather than performance-driven placements, based on the metrics OpenAI plans to provide at launch. Previous reports indicate that advertisers will be charged per impression, meaning payment is based on how often an ad is shown rather than whether it is clicked.
Advertiser access and rollout plans
The Information says OpenAI is reaching out to advertisers through agencies and focusing on big, established brands. The company is not initially targeting small advertisers. The first ChatGPT ads are expected to launch in the coming weeks, per the report. They will appear for users on ChatGPT’s free tier and the lower-cost Go tier.
OpenAI will exclude users under 18 from seeing ads, and ads will also not appear in conversations involving sensitive topics such as mental health or politics.
