Microsoft rolls out Copilot Checkout for in-chat purchases
The update puts Microsoft in competition with checkout tools from Google and OpenAI

Get Smarter at Marketing
Microsoft is rolling out Copilot Checkout, its first agentic commerce experience inside Copilot. The feature enables shoppers to complete purchases directly within a Copilot conversation instead of being redirected to a merchant’s website.
According to the company, the entire process happens inside the chat interface. A user can ask questions, review product options, and complete a purchase without leaving Copilot. Microsoft says this approach turns conversational intent into a completed transaction within the same interface.
Copilot Checkout is beginning to roll out in the U.S. on Copilot.com. The company says the feature works with several commerce and payment partners, including PayPal, Shopify, Stripe, and Etsy.
How merchants can sell through Copilot
With the launch of Copilot Checkout, merchants can sell products directly inside Copilot, its AI answer engine. The tool allows merchants’ products to appear during relevant conversations inside Copilot. When a user expresses purchase intent, the transaction can be completed within the same chat flow.
This means potential buyers do not need to visit an external website. A merchant's products can be discovered, discussed, and purchased without leaving the chat. Payments are also handled through Microsoft’s partner integrations, such as PayPal and Stripe. According to the company, merchants remain the merchant of record, which means they continue to handle payments, fulfillment, customer data, and the ongoing customer relationship.
Automatic access for Shopify merchants
Microsoft says Shopify merchants will automatically be able to sell through Copilot Checkout. No application or custom integration is required. Merchants will be enrolled after an opt-out window. Other merchants can also fill this Merchant Checkout form for eligibility. Â
Brand Agents bring merchant catalogsÂ
Microsoft has also launched Brand Agents, new AI assistants built to guide shoppers throughout their purchase journey. According to the company, these agents can answer detailed product questions, ask follow-up questions, and help narrow options based on shopper preferences and intent. They can also support product comparisons, shipping and return questions, provide checkout links, and recommend products.
The company adds that Brand Agents can extend into post-purchase moments, such as suggesting add-ons, replenishments, or related products based on previous purchases. Brand Agents are now available for Shopify merchants and can be added to a site in a few hours.
Microsoft enters a crowded agentic commerce race
Microsoft’s move comes as AI platforms increasingly compete to own more of the shopping funnel. Agentic commerce is no longer limited to recommendations and comparisons. Google has rolled out AI-powered shopping features inside Search, including agentic checkout and price tracking in AI Mode. These tools allow users to discover products and complete purchases without leaving Google’s interface.
OpenAI continues to expand its commerce efforts. The company has launched Instant Checkout and recently introduced Shopping Research for users to find and compare products inside ChatGPT. Perplexity has launched a conversational shopping assistant with integrated checkout through PayPal, enabling users to browse, chat, and purchase inside the AI experience. These developments show that AI platforms are competing to become commerce intermediaries.
