Google's Top Stories carousel is now fully live inside AI Overviews for mobile users in the U.S., according to Search Engine Land. The update places a row of recent news article links directly inside AI-generated answers in Search.

What the Carousel Shows

AI Overviews summarize a query at the top of the results page and cite the pages behind the summary. The carousel adds a separate block of article links to that surface for searches on developing topics, where Google says people often want to read a full article rather than rely on a summary alone.

In a May blog post, Google described the format as "a prominent carousel, which will also highlight your Preferred Sources," and said it would "help make timely articles more visible on a wider range of queries." Links from sites a user has starred as Preferred Sources carry a visible label inside the carousel, the same treatment those sources already receive in Top Stories on the standard results page.

From Announcement to Full Rollout

The carousel was one of three source-surfacing changes Google set out in late May, when it brought Preferred Sources into AI Overviews and AI Mode and added a "Highly Cited" badge to web article links.

Earlier that month, Google had extended the same personalization feature to every supported language. Google says the feature will expand to more users, though it has not provided a timeline. For now it runs on mobile in the U.S. and only on some queries.

Google's Publisher Traffic Position

The rollout arrives while Google is publicly defending how much traffic its AI features send to the open web. The company claims its AI Search features send billions of clicks to websites each week. Publishers have questioned that framing as AI-generated answers have scaled, and Google has not released click data specific to the carousel or to the Preferred Sources labels.

Rival AI answer engines are working through the same tension in court, facing publisher litigation over how they use news content. Google's approach so far has been to build citation placements into the answer itself, which keeps the referral argument on its own terms.

What It Means for Publishers and Marketers

The carousel could create a second route into AI Overviews beyond the inline citation links that appear under a summary. That matters most for time-sensitive coverage, since the placement is tied to developing-topic queries rather than evergreen ones. Reader adoption of Preferred Sources also now carries weight inside AI answers rather than only in Top Stories, and Google maintains documentation for site owners who want to promote it.

The open question is volume. The placement exists and is live, but Google has not published data on how often the carousel triggers or how it performs against standard AI Overview citations.
