Elon Musk’s AI company, xAI, has launched Grokipedia, a new AI-generated online encyclopedia that aims to rival Wikipedia. The platform went live on Monday at Grokipedia.com, marking Musk’s latest attempt to build what he calls a “truth-focused” alternative to existing information sources.

Musk first teased the idea of Grokipedia in late September after responding to a post on X by David Sacks, an AI investor, who described Wikipedia as “hopelessly biased.” In his reply, Musk said xAI was “building Grokipedia” and promised it would be “a massive improvement over Wikipedia.”

The new tool is powered by Grok, xAI’s generative AI chatbot that also integrates into X (formerly Twitter). The company claims that Grok generates and organizes content on Grokipedia, while users can freely search and read AI-created articles.

What Grokipedia looks like

When tested, the site displayed a familiar search interface similar to Google’s, with a dark background and a font style that mirrors Wikipedia. According to the site, Grokipedia is currently in its “version v0.1” stage and already hosts 885,279 articles. For context, Wikipedia’s English version has over 7 million articles, according to data listed on its website as of Tuesday.

A search for “ChatGPT” produced a results page structured like Wikipedia’s, with sections, headings, and references. The pages, however, did not include images. Some searches, such as “AI Mode,” did not return precise results, suggesting that the AI is still refining its indexing system.

Musk says Grokipedia aims to present “the truth”

Following the launch, Musk wrote on X that the goal of Grokipedia is “the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth.” He added that although the tool “will never be perfect,” it will continue to strive for that ideal. He also emphasized that Grokipedia is completely open source, allowing anyone to use it for free. That mirrors Wikipedia’s model, which has been community-driven since its founding in 2001.

Grokipedia aligns with Musk’s repeated criticism of Wikipedia. Over the past year, he has accused the platform of being “controlled by far-left activists” and has argued that its editorial process makes it unsuitable as a reliable reference for X’s Community Notes.

The project now appears to be an extension of xAI’s broader mission to build tools that Musk claims are “neutral” alternatives to existing AI and information platforms. Still, Wikipedia remains the world’s largest collaborative encyclopedia, written and maintained by volunteers. It relies heavily on community moderation and donation funding.
