Elon Musk has confirmed that X is preparing to replace its current ranking system with an entirely AI-powered model before the end of the year. In a post quoting X’s head of product, Nikita Bier, Musk wrote, “The algorithm will be purely AI by November, with significant progress along the way.” He added that by November or December, users will be able to dynamically adjust their feeds by directly asking X’s AI chatbot, Grok.

Currently, X relies on automated suggestions built mostly from limited engagement signals such as likes, follows, and shares. The shift means the AI chatbot Grok will take over this process. The company claims this will give people more direct control over what they see.

How X says the AI-driven timeline will work

According to Musk, the new feed will allow users to directly communicate with Grok to decide what appears in their timelines. Instead of passively scrolling through content determined by broad algorithms, people will be able to type or speak commands to refine their feed. For example, a user could ask Grok to show more posts about photography or to reduce the number of political discussions in their feed.

Nikita Bier, head of product at X, explained that the intention is to move users away from what he called the “mainstream algo and the political crusades” and instead toward communities built around personal interests. Bier wrote, “You should be able to post about your interests and have friendly, relevant people chime in.” X’s feed aims to shift focus from trending conversations to more niche communities.

How this compares with other platforms

Platforms are testing new ways to give people more explicit tools to customize what they see, rather than leaving everything to hidden ranking systems.

X’s approach has similarities with experiments seen on Meta’s Threads. Some Threads users recently noticed an account called @threads.algo designed to fine-tune recommendations. Instagram has also said it is testing options that allow users to select or hide topics that appear in their feeds.

However, TikTok’s “For You” feed still sets the standard for personalized recommendations. It automates the process without asking for active input, which has proven popular with users.
