Meta has entered into a partnership with Midjourney, the popular AI platform that creates images and videos from text prompts. Under the agreement, Meta will license Midjourney’s “aesthetic technology” for use in its future AI models and products.
Alexandr Wang, Meta’s Chief AI Officer, said the company needs to work with “the best players across the industry” to build stronger products. He explained that Meta’s approach involves bringing in top talent, expanding its computing resources, and forming external partnerships like this one.
Why Midjourney matters in Meta’s AI push
Midjourney was founded in 2022 and quickly became one of the most recognized names in AI image and video generation. The company operates on a subscription model. In June, it made V7 its default image model, describing it as a smarter system for handling text prompts. Around the same time, it released V1, a video model that allows users to turn generated images into short animations.
“We are incredibly impressed by Midjourney,” Wang said. “They have accomplished true feats of technical and aesthetic excellence, and we are thrilled to be working more closely with them.”
Meta is aiming to integrate similar visual capabilities into its own AI systems. The company has already launched ‘Movie Gen’ to create short videos from text prompts. With Midjourney’s technology, it could stand out against rivals such as OpenAI and Google, both of which are aggressively expanding their AI offerings. Users are already experimenting with OpenAI’s Sora and Google’s Veo.
The financial details of the deal have not been shared. However, Midjourney’s CEO, David Holz, said on X that the company remains independent and has never taken outside funding.
