Instagram expands Reels algorithm controls to all English-speaking users
The goal is to let users manage topics based on their personal preferences

Instagram has expanded its ’Your Algorithm’ feature to all English-speaking users globally. The update introduces manual controls that allow users to adjust the topics influencing what appears in their Instagram Reels feed. Users can now add or remove interest topics that influence their Reels feed, instead of relying only on Instagram’s automated recommendation system.
The announcement was shared by Instagram head Adam Mosseri in a post on Threads. According to Mosseri, the feature lets users tune parts of Instagram’s Reels algorithm by selecting topics they want to see more or less of, based on their personal interests and viewing activity. Mosseri said, “The ‘Your Algorithm’ feature gives users direct control over parts of Instagram’s recommendation algorithm for Reels.”
This update builds on testing that began in late 2025. Instagram previously rolled out early versions of algorithm tuning tools to small groups of users, starting in the U.S. before expanding access. Those tests focused on allowing users to add or remove interest topics that influenced recommendations across Reels and Explore.
How ‘Your Algorithm’ works inside the Reels tab
The controls appear inside the Reels tab. When users open Reels and tap the algorithm icon at the top of the screen, Instagram displays a list of suggested topics. These topics are generated based on a user’s activity, including the types of videos they watch or interact with.
From that screen, users can manually add topics they want to see more often or remove topics they want to see less frequently. Instagram said these selections are used as inputs that influence how future Reels content is ranked and surfaced in the feed.
A limited-time option to set top interests for 2026
Instagram is also introducing a temporary option tied to the start of the year. For a limited period, users are prompted to select three interests they want to see more of in 2026. Instagram presents this as a one-time input that feeds into how the recommendation system prioritizes Reels content.
Mosseri explained in his announcement, “Since it’s the start of the year, for a limited time you can also tell your algorithm the top three interests you want to see more of in 2026.”
The company has not provided details on how long this option will be available or whether similar prompts will appear later in the year.
