Apple is planning a major update to its Siri voice assistant using a custom version of Google’s Gemini AI model, Bloomberg reported. According to the report, the deal could cost Apple about $1 billion per year.

The Gemini model is built with 1.2 trillion parameters, which measure the AI’s ability to process complex information and understand context. By comparison, Apple’s current cloud-based Apple Intelligence system uses a 150 billion-parameter model.

Gemini model powers new Siri functions

Apple plans to use the custom Gemini model primarily for Siri’s summarizer and planner functions. These components help the assistant synthesize information and determine how to handle complex tasks. Other features will continue to rely on Apple’s in-house AI systems. Bloomberg reports that this agreement is separate from earlier discussions about integrating Gemini directly into Siri as a chatbot.

Apple’s approach to data privacy

Apple plans to run Gemini on its Private Cloud Compute servers. This ensures that user data stays within Apple’s infrastructure rather than moving to Google’s servers. Bloomberg notes that Apple has already allocated AI server hardware to support the large-scale model. This setup emphasizes maintaining user privacy while increasing Siri’s capabilities.

A temporary solution until Apple’s AI is ready

Apple previously explored using AI models from OpenAI and Anthropic before settling on Google’s Gemini earlier this year. The partnership does not involve integrating Google search into Apple systems or turning Gemini into a chatbot version of Siri.

The company views Gemini as a temporary solution until its own AI systems are fully developed. Apple CEO Tim Cook told investors that the upgraded Siri is expected in spring 2026, leaving the possibility open for additional third-party AI integrations.

Competitors have been adding AI capabilities to their assistants. Google integrated its Gemini AI model into its own assistant last year, and Amazon introduced AI-powered updates to Alexa earlier in 2025.
